Mike Knight Looks For Career First Late Model Championship

Ripley, NY – Young gun talent Mike Knight, 20, of Ripley, NY, who burst upon the dirt Late Model scene two years ago, is looking ahead at a potential championship title at Eriez Speedway in Hammett, PA in only his second year of racing dirt Late Models. Forgoing the dreaded ‘sophomore jinx’, Knight has 12 top fives and 19 top tens in 28 starts including a feature win during 2007 driving his Arrowhead Wine Cellars, Mobilia Fruit Farm, Ottaway’s Auto Body, Knight Farms, RJB Construction, Chess’ Pizza sponsored Rocket Chassis/Craiger Racing Engines #9k.

Currently first in season point standings at Eriez Speedway in both the Super Late Model and Limited Late Model divisions, Knight also is positioned sixth in Stateline (NY) Speedway point standings. Knight’s feature win this season came at Stateline Speedway.

“We’ve definitely had a good season,” stated Knight. “My brother, Andy, and the whole crew have done a great job for us. With Eriez rained out today (Sunday August 5) we only have four more races there I think and by no means do we think we have the championship wrapped up. There are too many good drivers there and out of 25 drivers 15 can win any night. We still have a ways to go but we hope we can pull it off.”

“It would be especially gratifying to win the Super Late Model and Limited Late Model titles but we’ll take what we can get. To win the Super Late Model title, I think it would be good for us in terms of exposure and hopefully attracting more sponsorship. But we can’t complain. When the season started I had two goals. One, to win a feature this year, and two, make a World of Outlaws Late Model Series race. We’ve done both.”

Knight’s feature win came at Stateline Speedway in Busti, NY on April 21. His World of Outlaws Late Model Series start came at Eriez Speedway on July 22 where he finished an impressive tenth in the main event.

Knight and the team has raced during 2007 at Stateline Speedway, Eriez Speedway, Mckean County Raceway, Raceway 7, Lernerville Speedway, Mercer Raceway Park, Woodhull Raceway, Tri-City Speedway and Hagerstown Speedway. They are planning off-season racing as well.

“We don’t make it to a lot of fall shows,” said Knight. “We start our grape season in the middle of September, but we are going to make to Tri-City for the World of Outlaws Late Model Series show. Other races we are going to attend are the MACS show at Lernerville on August 31, the two day show at Raceway 7 the 7th and 8th of September, McKean County Raceway on the 28th and 29th of September.

“My brother just said we are going try to make it to FallFest at Challenger Raceway depending on how our harvest season is going. And in November, we are tentatively planning on going to the Dirt Track at Lowe’s for their World of Outlaws Late Model Series race.”

The friendly young driver works as an entrepreneur with his own mini storage units in addition to working on the family’s grape farm. The team consists of car owner/ crew chief Andy Knight, Martin Dorman, Paul Dorman, Travis Furlow, Joe Best, Elias Quintero, Phil Knight, Jeff Lyon and Scott Boardman.

This past weekend Knight had a less than memorable night at Stateline Speedway on Saturday evening although he did win the King of the Hill race over friend Chad Valone. During the Super Late Model main event as Knight was caught up in a mishap on lap 22 of feature and finished 18th.

This coming weekend Knight will be competing at Woodhull Raceway in Woodhull, NY for the United Late Model Series (ULMS) race on Saturday and then back to Eriez Speedway on Sunday.
