May 22, 2008 Mike Knight Ready for Busy Memorial Day Weekend of Racing RIPLEY, NY –Rising young dirt Late Model star Mike Knight is ready for a Memorial Day Weekend filled with racing – as long as Mother Nature cooperates. After all three of his scheduled starts were washed out by rain last weekend, the 21-year-old from Ripley, N.Y., can’t wait to see some clear skies. He will take part in an Independent Racing Series (IRS) tripleheader, on Friday night (May 23) at Raceway 7 in Conneaut, Ohio; Saturday night (May 24) at Muskingum County Speedway in Zanesville, Ohio; and Sunday night (May 25) at Cannonball Speedway in St. Clairsville, Ohio. “The rain last weekend gave us a chance to get caught up and even do some other things,” said Knight, who had planned to run IRS events last weekend at McKean County Raceway in East Smethport, Pa., and Stateline Speedway in Busti, N.Y., as well as a regular Sunday-night program at Eriez Speedway in Hammett, Pa. “But I’m excited to get back at it and go racing.” Knight is especially pumped about Friday night’s show at Raceway, a 7/16th-mile oval that he’s quite familiar with. “We won seven or eight steel-block Late Model races there during our first year of racing,” Knight said of Raceway 7. “That’s a place we’ve usually run pretty well at.” The driver known as ‘Hollywood’ will be making his first-ever appearances at Muskingum County and Cannonball. The IRS holiday-weekend tripleheader will serve as the first leg of the tour’s ‘Rapid Refund Week’ in the Buckeye State. The five-race swing – with all races running over the 50-lap distance and paying $5,000 to win – will conclude on May 30 at Skyline Speedway in Stewart, Ohio, and May 31 at Sharon Speedway in Hartford, Ohio. Knight enters the weekend ranked ninth in the overall IRS points standings and fourth in the tour’s Rookie of the Year points battle. An up-and-coming dirt Late Model driver whose breakout 2007 season was highlighted by a points title at Eriez Speedway, Knight has an ambitious schedule of 70-plus races across the region planned with his family-owned team in 2008. His operation carries sponsorship from Arrowhead Wine Cellars, Mobilia Fruit Farm, Ottawaya’s Auto Body, Knight Farms, RJB Construction, Chessa’ Pizza, NYPenn Surveying, TeCulver Contracting, Genesis Shocks, Lehman Motorsports, Slavic Custom Racing Shirts and American Racing Tires.
