Knight Captures Limited Late Model Event at Fall Fest

Indiana, PA (October 13, 2007)
After completing all but one lap of the Super Late Model event, Mike Knight went back to the pits and jumped in his Semi-Late, which was waiting for him in the lineup area. From ninth starting position, Knight drove it to a $2000 victory in the 40-lap Semi-Late Super Championship race.

Bernie Whiteford and Michael Altobelli, Jr. led the field to green, with Altobelli quickly taking command. Knight had quickly advanced to fourth by lap 4, and at that point the yellow flag waved for the first time in the event. There were two cautions on lap 4, but when racing resumed there would be just one more yellow flag in the remaining distance. Altobelli held command through lap 10 working the inside, but Knight was strong on the outside lane. Knight made the pass for the lead on lap 11, and quickly moved away from the rest of the field.

At the halfway mark on lap 20, it was Knight leading Altobelli, Matt Gaston, Dwayne Taneyhill, and Andy Fries. Gaston passed Altobelli for second on lap 28, but Knight had a huge lead. Gaston would need a caution if he were to have a chance at Knight, and a lap later he had his chance as the event’s final caution waved as Altobelli experienced problems and rolled to a stop. Back to green for the final time, Knight drove away leaving the competition to race for second. Taneyhill nosed ahead of Gaston on lap 30, but Gaston regained the spot the next time by.

Bump Hedman had also run the Super Late Model feature, and he was getting his second wind after starting 19th. Hedman took third on lap 31, and set his sights on Gaston. But Knight had smooth sailing over the remaining laps on his way to the Semi-Late victory. Gaston was second, with Hedman advancing 16 positions to finish third. Fries was fourth, as Tim Fedder turned in an impressive drive from 21st to finish fifth. Taneyhill had won both previous Semi-Late features at Challenger in 2007, but settled for sixth as 18th starting Lincoln Ritchey, Derek Byler, Bruce Takach, and Ed Connor completed the top ten.

Heat race wins in the 79-car field went to Altobelli, Byler, Gaston, Craig Perigo, Jeff Compton, Knight, Fries, and Whiteford.

Last Chance Race winners were Max Blair, Ritchey, Hedman, and Yvette Hahn.
